Combining a business of surveying and photography since my first days on site I have accumulated a mass of well maintained photographs and records of the exact dates taken. Ive considered that many of our customers are repeat customers and companies like Andrew Scott Ltd in South Wales I have been involved with for 30 years now.
There are character's from the past from many of the companies I have worked with who I recall as exceptional people and there have along the way been some funny or important memories that are with me that I'm sure many of the site visitors would like to share also.
Amongst these character's one stands out above all. The late Bill Corrigan of Andrew Scott Ltd who would send fear even into the toughest skinned construction worker. To even have a photo of this iconic director was risking ones job but I recall the day as a young trainee I positioned myself on site in a position to capture the image. Since that day I have always wanted to add a little colour and record of what life was like on site. Other character's I recall over the years will be amongst the pages being developed. There was "Chalkie " my chainman at Fairclough Civil Engineering Ltd on the M25 in 1983. There was Willie Frazer a labourer with Costain Ltd whom I worked with from 1985-1990 A legend & undoubtably the hardest working man I ever met in my life. There was Peter Westcott of Lovell Ltd who had amazing abilities and respect in man management. There was Terry Hayes of T.Potter and Son Ltd, my Chief Engineer when I started on site on March 20th 1978 and a person I later employed -his ability and work ethic that is almost untouchable, just took me 25 years to appreciate it ! There was Dave Allen of Trafalgar House Technology Ltd who I worked with as an assistant just after my dad died in 1987- a time when I thought I had learnt almost everything I am placed working with an engineer that I still consider to this day to have the finest ability in accurate metrology surveying I will ever come across.I learned in a few weeks here that, "I would always be learning !".
Alongside these icons there are other memories some a bit hilarious - I won't add identity to any that would cause embarressment such as a labourer once employed on a site in Narbeth who whilst putting the posters up in the canteen remarked "It's 999 down here for the ambulance ?". "Yes of course" I replied what makes you ask such a question !". The question and reply were totally serious "Well its also 999 up where I live." To this day I have not recovered from the shock of considering how this man thought the emergency numbers changed in different parts of the country.
As well as the iconic people and stories, I will recall some of the great companies I worked with and sadly the companies are no more. First on the list will be T.Potter & Sons Ltd who crashed in May 1980 where I have reams of photos of the offices & sites. A real "GREAT" company that I traded with until its demise in Feb 2000 was DMD Ltd of Cardiff - full name was Davies Middleton Davies Ltd and a company that should never have been wound up. There will be some nice stories of companies where I have experienced an excellent ethos in practise of treating subcontractors fairly and as a valued service. Here companies like John Laing Ltd, DMD Ltd, Costain Civil Engineering Ltd and Edmund Nuttall Ltd stand out the most. Other notable companies could easily have made the grade but were not consistent enough from site to site. Hopefuly this part of the site will develop as an enjoyable place to visit. Thanks for your patience whilst I develop the pages.
